On Oct 21, 2004, during its General Meeting, the Metropolitan Detroit Chapter of the SID presented Dr. Vincent Cannella of ECD Ovonics, the Chapter's "2004 Chapter Services Award" for the services he performed for the Chapter over the last 17 years.
Dr. Cannella received his Ph.D. degree from Fordham University in New York City and did his post-doctoral studies at Wayne State University in Detroit, Michigan. Besides his work at ECD he also spent a number of years at OIS Optical Imaging Systems, directing the manufacture of LCDs and helped to lead and support many SID meetings at that facility in Plymouth, Michigan.
This award includes a $250 stipend from the SID Americas Region VP and a matching amount from the chapter. He was also presented with a special plaque dedicated to this award.
Dr. Cannella is one of the founding members of the chapter and has supported our chapter in many ways over those 17 years. He served in many Chapter Executive Committee duties and was the originator of the Metro-politan Detroit Chapter's Scholarship Award Program. He is currently Treasurer of the Chapter (and has been for a number of years), and was on the Chapter Symposia Paper and Program Review Committees and served as a Session Chair in a number of Chapter Symposia. In the early days of our Chapter Symposia, he worked with the University of Michigan and the Center of Display Technology in support of our chapter activities.

The First International Seminar on DisplayOptics (Display Optics '04) took place October 18–20, 2004 in St. Petersburg, Russia. The seminar was organized by the Society for Information Display (SID), the Russian Chapter of SID, the D. S. Rozhdestvensky Optical Society, the D. I. Mendeleev Russian Chemical Society, and the S. I. Vavilov State Optical Institute (SOI). Financial support was provided by the European SID Chapter and the Russian Ministry of Science and Education.
The Display Optics '04 seminar ran concurrently with the sixth International Conference on Applied Optics and the sixth International Applied Optics Congress, entitled Optics – XXI Century). This gave seminar participants the unique opportunity to take part in discussions on actual problems of modern applied optics and to attend the Applied Optics Plenary Lectures. These lectures were as follows:
• New Materials for Stimulated Raman Emission Lasers (T. Basiev and V. M. Osiko, Prokhorov Institute of General Physics, Moscow)
• Optical fibers: Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow (Yu. N. Kondratiev, Vavilov State Optical Institute, St. Petersburg)
• Optical Spectroscopy of Semiconductor Nanostructures (A. V. Fiodorov, Vavilov State Optical Institute)
Some of the problems discussed at the lectures received further elaboration at the Display Optics '04 technical sessions.
The Display Optics '04 seminar took place at the Centre of St. Petersburg in the historic D. I. Mendeleev Russian Chemical Society building, where the great Russian chemist D. I. Menedeleev read his lectures. The building of the former Physical Institute, where V. K. Freedericksz first explained the nature of electro-optical effects in liquid crystals, is quite close to the Chemical Society building. During the opening ceremony, the famous chemist Professor Roman Dabrowsky from Poland was awarded the V. K. Freedericksz Honorable Medal of the Liquid Crystal Society.
The seminar attracted more than 50 participants from six European countries and different regions of Russia and Byelorussia. Among the quests were scientists from Stravropol, Novosibirsk, Ulan-Ude, Ryazan, Kishenev, Saratov, and Krasnoyarsk. Four main topics were discussed during the sessions: liquid-crystal materials and LCDs, emissive displays and phosphors, display engineering and applications, and 3-D displays. The seminar program, containing 36 oral and 18 poster papers, and a book of abstracts were distributed to the participants. A CD containing the seminar presentations was made available, and selected papers will be published in a special issue of the Journal of Optical Technology (Optichesky Zhurnal) in 2005. (Optichesky Zhurnal is a Russian– U.S. journal published by the Vavilov State Optical Institute and the American Physical Society.)
The special event was an excursion to the D. I. Mendeleev Museum, and the cultural program was a concert by the St. Petersburg Philharmonic Orchestra conducted by Maestto V. Temirkhanov.
The next International Seminar on Display optics is being planned for 2006.
